A refined Southern delicacy. Top of the pecking order.

Hen humor:

"What was your cock-a-doodle-doing?"

"Well, what do you think cock-a-doodles-do?"

"Cock-a-doodle-do?"

"No, what cock-a-doodleS-do?"

"Isn't that what I'M asking YOU?"

"No, NO!, not KNOW."

"You DON'T know?"

"Oh, I know."

"Know what?"

"What cock-a-doodles do."

"I asked you that five minutes ago."

"What?"

"What was your cock-a-doodle doing?"

"Well, what do you think cock-a-doodles-do?"

(Then, depending on the concentration of the "hens", this is the joke that never ends.)

This was a popular 'refrain' acted out by the young farm girls (hens) when local farmers would gather at trade shops in the 1800s.

The best would tuck their arms and mimic strutting and feeding throughout the performance.

A farm girls' version of Laurel and Hardy's "Who's on first?"

My great grandmother passed the lyrics on to my grandmother who passed the lyrics on to MY mother

Ended there, until just now...as my two sons wanted no part of it.

So, there you are.

Fantastic story telling.

Unique style.

Bravo.

Oh my Word! This is pure gold! I’m going to have to print this and save it for a future post. You have to tell me more about your grandmother. I wanna hear everything. Would you consider talking to me off-line… For a future story?

You have just tickled my heart to no end with this laurel and Hardy farm girl repertoire !

Miss Maria this is well done. It tells a story that is funny, sad and tragic all at once.
